LEADERSHIP EVALUATION

LEADERSHIP EVALUATION
Exploring the Riftlands can be a dangerous endeavor, even for Liminals, so it's always important that members of the Explorer Division keep their powers honed, their bodies fit, and their minds sharp. It's also important to ensure that those most qualified to be in charge are placed there. To that end, Samuel J. Thornton has called all the members, both primary and supplementary, together for their first Leadership Evaluation.
Thornton holds these evaluations every few months to determine who will be placed in charge when the Division divides into smaller groups to carry out different missions and investigate different areas. The evaluation has three parts: combat practice, an obstacle course, and the (much dreaded) written strategic/leadership assessment. The evaluations tend to take a few hours and moods among the Division members run the gamut. Some take it quite seriously, studying and training ahead of time and giving it their all. Some act as if it's just another requirement from Thornton and treat it like any other training session to be overcome or endured. Some only show up because they know if they don't Thornton will put them on administrative leave (ugh). Regardless, it's a big day for the Division.
During combat practice, each member will face off against a handful of robotic combatants with customized programming based on Thornton's assessment of their skills. This is held in a moderately-sized training room in the middle of the hall. During the obstacle course, each member will be given places to reach and tasks to complete throughout a maze of obstacles that run the gamut from shifting walls to collapsing floors to blasts with a numbing (and gradually paralytic) effect and beyond. The engineers in Operations and Security have really outdone themselves this year! This is held in the enormous training room at the end of the hall. During the written strategic/leadership assessment, each member will take a long, comprehensive exam designed to assess their reasoning, their empathy, their strategic prowess, and their leadership ability. This is held in a moderately-sized training room at the beginning of the hall that has been filled up with desks.
Non-Explorer residents from across the Station are also welcome to participate if they want to test their mettle, though they may find themselves being recruited by Thornton if they do exceptionally well. Otherwise, they are welcome to show up and watch the action through a series of monitors that line the basement hallway. Even the room with the written exam appears on one screen for some unknown reason. It's a bit of an event. [Non-Explorer Character A] even brings refreshments and has printed up some little flags and trinkets featuring the names of some more impressive (at least in their opinion!) contenders. Are they trying to be supportive or psych someone out or just trying to make a buck? It's hard to say.

HOW THIS WORKS
Every few months, the Explorer Division will hold Leadership Evaluations. These evaluations will use player forms and RNG to determine which characters are going to be placed in leadership positions during upcoming explorations of the Riftlands. This doesn't translate to any particular power or authority in the game day to day, but is something for players to play off of and will change throughout the course of the game.
IC all characters in the Explorer Division must complete this evaluation. Even if a player doesn't complete this form OOC, it will be assumed that their character competed unless specified elsewhere.
Thornton is notoriously strict and difficult to please, so it isn't uncommon for evaluation scores to be absolutely brutal. But don't take it personally. He's just trying to help you realize your potential!
Fill out the form below to see how your character handles the evaluation!
» DURING THE EVALUATIONS: For those lingering in the halls waiting on their results, those watching the challenges play out on the monitors, and anyone else that's hanging around.
» AFTER THE EVALUATIONS: After the evaluations have wrapped up for the day.

THE EVALUATIONS
THE EVALUATIONS: Hera Vincent-Skovgaard
EXPLORER DIVISION?: Yes (Primary/New)
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: N/A
POWER CONTROL: 8-9. Hera has very good control of her pyrokinesis and its related perks (her resistance to high temperature never falters, for example). She's limited in that she cannot reliably generate fire on her own, so if she drops her lighters along the way things could get very real for her very fast. sdlkgh
PHYSICAL ABILITY: 4. Small, scrappy and physically confident, but not notably strong or athletic. She does run daily and can keep moving for a decent amount of time without tiring out.
MENTAL ABILITY: She would call herself a 10, but I'm going to give her a 9 lmfao. She's convinced she'll do well on the written exam, but the truth is she's feeling the pressure to perform.
EFFORT: Medium. Hera is not particularly interested in leadership, but can't bring herself to phone it in while her new coworkers are watching.
ANYTHING ELSE?: ♥
THE EVALUATIONS: Hera Vincent-Skovgaard
EVALUATIONS: Minty Payne
EXPLORER DIVISION?: Yes (Primary/Returning)
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: No
POWER CONTROL: A solid 7.5? She's worked on honing her skills over the past year and it shows!
PHYSICAL ABILITY: 5. She's in decent shape but not strong; her agility and dexterity are what keep this score from being lower.
MENTAL ABILITY:
Minty says 119. She's a smart cookie! She thrives on challenges & being tested so the exam is kind of fun for her.EFFORT: High. Minty wants this! She was working towards leadership before the blip so she's even more determined than usual.
ANYTHING ELSE?: N/A <3
EVALUATIONS: Minty Payne
THE EVALUATIONS: Rufus Kearney
EXPLORER DIVISION?: Yes (Supplementary/Returning)
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: Over the years & previous stations he's served at, I'd say he's held a leadership position once or twice before. Let's say his particular skill is stepping up at short notice.
POWER CONTROL: Random station-wide blips notwithstanding, let's say 9.5 -- a 10 if discounting the radiation thing, so drop 0.5 because it's hard to safely train that aspect of his powers. He's had them for 17 years, though, so every other aspect is pretty much there.
PHYSICAL ABILITY: An 8? He's a runner (could definitely do a marathon; an Ironman if given forewarning) and is very into his yoga, but he's also a man in his mid-40s.
MENTAL ABILITY: 8.
EFFORT: Rufus hates half-assing anything, so: high.
ANYTHING ELSE?: Happy Friday!
THE EVALUATIONS: Rufus Kearney
Re: THE EVALUATIONS: Rufus Kearney
THE EVALUATIONS: LOU
EXPLORER DIVISION?: Yes (Primary/Returning)
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: Yes; he's smart, reliable, and has wilderness skills, but he's also bossy and lacks tact.
POWER CONTROL: 8*; he's old and he knows his powers inside and out, but he's only as good as conditions allow him to be (ie. if there aren't any plants to use as weapons, he's got nothing, combat-wise; if there's no sun, he can't use photosynthesis etc; if you put him in a dark, empty room, he's just Some Guy).
PHYSICAL ABILITY: 5; he keeps fit and he's agile (skateboard club!! hiking! rock climbing!) but not particularly strong or fast. He has better strength/endurance/healing than normal when it's sunny out (but this is indoors so I'm gonna assume this doesn't apply). Otherwise, he's just a 42 year old man.
MENTAL ABILITY: 10; Professor Dork over here is a know-it-all who loves tests.
EFFORT: High effort! He always gives it 110% because he is desperate for external validation.
ANYTHING ELSE?: Wrote way too much for the written portion. Sorry!!! This is a man who wrote a PhD out of spite, I'm sorry he's like this.
THE EVALUATIONS: LOU
Re: THE EVALUATIONS: LOU
Re: THE EVALUATIONS: LOU
Re: THE EVALUATIONS: LOU
THE EVALUATIONS: Rory Fairfax
EXPLORER DIVISION?: Yes (Primary/Returning)
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: yes, probably a couple of times given how long he's been here. it was not his favourite. he did fine and saved his stress for post-debrief.
POWER CONTROL: an unwilling 8 — he has good control but he's almost always hesitant to use them. medical assistance is first when a viable option, even if he has to do his EMT thing. it may also be worth noting that in the field, under NO circumstances will he use them offensively.
probably.PHYSICAL ABILITY: 10 lmao it's all he's got. (stronk + fast boi, good climb, better at taking hits than being dextrous and he knows it.) (he's also here to combat all the 'this man is in his 40s' slander!!! LIFT SOME WEIGHTS, YOU NERDS!!!!)
MENTAL ABILITY: ... 3? good in an emergency, good at reading the land, let's end it there. won't do well on the written portion.
EFFORT: medium — while he doesn't want the job and he's not competitive, neither does he want to be on thornton's shitlist.
ANYTHING ELSE?: i can't wait to read all the forms kjtgnskn
THE EVALUATIONS: Rory Fairfax
Re: THE EVALUATIONS: Rory Fairfax
THE EVALUATIONS: Salvador Roca
EXPLORER DIVISION?: Yes (Supplementary/New)
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: N/A
POWER CONTROL: 6. With his powers being "always on," they're quite reliable, but Sal lacks any fine control with them. Both of his powers are reactive instead of proactive, so all he can really demonstrate is that he's good at taking hits in the name of getting up-close with an opponent so he can switch off their powers and/or just pummel them.
PHYSICAL ABILITY: 10. Former athlete who was participating in MMA fights as recently as several months ago, and hasn't stopped going to the gym. His harm immunity gives him unnatural endurance—he just KEEPS GOING, even when his body shouldn't.
MENTAL ABILITY: 1, because the dice are feeling ungenerous. This number is only little higher on a good day—Sal can come up with plans, but most of his plans are bad. Usually he gets through situations by brute-forcing it. Does not handle the written test well at all.
EFFORT: High. He doesn't want to be a leader, but doesn't want to look like a dweeb in front of everyone. His powers aren't flashy, so he's very conscious of needing to prove he's capable here.
ANYTHING ELSE?: He uses his powers as a crutch, so he definitely got hurt way more than he should in the name of getting to the goal faster. It's fine! He can literally just walk it off!
THE EVALUATIONS: Salvador Roca
THE EVALUATIONS: Vidalia LaRoux
EXPLORER DIVISION?: Yes (supplementary/new)
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: n/a
POWER CONTROL: About a 7. There's not a lot that she needs to or can control (aside from the prosthetics she chooses), but sometimes she can't stop an arm from pulling out of its socket or a toe from flying across the room. Whoooooops.
PHYSICAL ABILITY: Another 7. She's been pretty physical her whole life, climbing fences before she could walk and squeezing into tight little airducts for work, so she has a good baseline of stamina/strength/flexibility. It's not at all disciplined, though, and if she's using her natural arms instead of a prosthetic they have practically no tone at all.
MENTAL ABILITY: 3. Impulsive and not very strategic, always looking for the quickest way through a situation instead of the most prudent. For the written, she knows how to hold a pencil and the basic fifth grade five-sentence paragraph structure, so she is sticking to it. Also sprinkling in semicolons and em dashes to make it seem pretty.
EFFORT: High!!! She's not expecting to be a leader or anything, but she wants everyone watching her to be like "oh wow look at how impressive and badass that Vidalia is I would really like to be her friend now."
ANYTHING ELSE?: According to the canon I set for myself her right arm is a gadgety robotic prosthetic atm and her left hand is just a lil silicon buddy.
THE EVALUATIONS: Vidalia LaRoux
THE EVALUATIONS: Parson Starling
EXPLORER DIVISION?: Yes (Supplementary/Returning) (formerly Primary)
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: Previously, yes.
POWER CONTROL: 6 today (rolled with Cranky Inertia Power disadvantage). While Parson has excellent control over his own inborn power, other abilities he borrows can be unpredictable, and the inertia power he's inherited, in particular, gives him trouble.
PHYSICAL ABILITY: 9. Physically fit, with a bit of supernatural resilience when his powers are working right. Don't tell him he's anything lower than a 10/10 or you'll hurt his feelings, though.
MENTAL ABILITY: 8. Smart, empathic, and excellent at taking tests.
EFFORT: High. Always extremely high.
ANYTHING ELSE?: Two Things!!: (1) Opting out of leadership OOC as I am still sort of in the woods, but I love a form and am trying to get my brain to be present (2) Let me know if your character would've let Parson tap them to share powers during his portion of the exam; he would've been hitting up folks with physically practical abilities like enhanced strength, etc.
THE EVALUATIONS: Parson Starling
THE EVALUATIONS: Parson Starling
THE EVALUATIONS: Rhodes Callaway
EXPLORER DIVISION?:Yes, Primary/Returning
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: Nope!
POWER CONTROL: Mmm let's say 8 here. He has had his power for quite some time, but when faced with Big Emotions they can still go weird. He doesn't anticipate weird emotions here, so.
PHYSICAL ABILITY: Let's say an even 5, seeing as his robots let him use his powers a little. He has been an explorer long enough that he's had to keep in shape by running and other things but he's at heart an indoor kid
MENTAL ABILITY: I'm going to give him a 9 here because he's a nerd do you need any other reason
EFFORT: High! He knows he has Enemies in the Explorer division and nothing would please him more than showing them up. This is dramatic. He just has an ex and his ex's friends. But he'd be a try-hard anyway, so this is like, super high stakes.
ANYTHING ELSE?: Kill him
THE EVALUATIONS: Rhodes Callaway
THE EVALUATIONS: Rye Ashburn
OrionRye AshburnEXPLORER DIVISION?: Yes (Primary/New)
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: N/A
POWER CONTROL: 8.5 - Rye's powers come to him as naturally as breathing, and he doesn't hesitate while manipulating objects or moving himself through the space. He loses points because when startled or emotional, his control falters. With abilities like his, that can cause disastrous results.
PHYSICAL ABILITY: 7 - Decently athletic, but built for speed and agility rather than strength.
MENTAL ABILITY: 3 - Rye can be a creative problem solver, but he's not really a planner. He either works completely alone, or needs someone telling him what to do. He's clearly nervous about being tested, and his written exam is... bad.
EFFORT: Medium. Honestly, it fluctuates wildly throughout the day. For some tests he's confident to the point of arrogance. In others, he does his best to blend in with nearby furniture so no one talks to him.
ANYTHING ELSE?: Mwah!
THE EVALUATIONS: Rye Ashburn
THE EVALUATIONS: Annie Song
EXPLORER DIVISION?: Yes (Supplementary/Returning)
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: No.
POWER CONTROL: Annie's ability to transform into her insect form is a 10. She has never failed to make the transformation on command before. When she was younger, she would sometimes struggle to return to her human form but that hasn't happened in some time. She has less control (8) over her secondary powers (heightened senses), or rather, she has a limited ability to use those powers in a helpful way. It's just ambient sensory overload that she can dampen or sharpen with an 8 out 10 level of skill. She has 0 control of her loyalty manipulation and I can't imagine it works on robots anyway!! Although, it may cause others at the evaluation to feel lightly compelled to jump in and help her. Feel free to say your character experienced this compulsion -- it's easy to ignore, so no pressure either way.
PHYSICAL ABILITY: Annie the human's physical ability is like... a 6? She takes care of herself and jogs regularly but she's petite and not particularly agile. Annie the bug is like an 8. She's stronger, more hardy (hard shell), and alarmingly fast. She's a little more like... physically dumb, though? She has a more difficult time making multi-step decisions when she's a bug, so an obstacle course with any level of puzzling involved would be difficult for her as a bug.
MENTAL ABILITY: Annie is highly analytical and doesn't have test anxiety. If this test is like... logic puzzles, I'd give her a 9. That said, she's maybe too empathetic and will select 'retreat' as an option at the slightest provocation. She's reading All Quiet on the Western Front right now and that is really coloring her willingness to put others in any level of harms way. So, if a good score on this test means being a motivating leader under any circumstance, she's like a 3. Sign the peace accords with the Undying Asphodels!!!
EFFORT: High. She doesn't want to be an exploration leader but she wants to give Thorton a completely accurate picture of her abilities.
ANYTHING ELSE?: She tries to hype people up on the side lines!!!
THE EVALUATIONS: Annie Song
THE EVALUATIONS: Evan Finch (Non-explorer)
EXPLORER DIVISION?: No
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: N/A
POWER CONTROL: 9.5; Evan's powers aren't really much in the way of being the type for performative action. They're natural and they don't take much effort to use. But sometimes, an animal says no or there isn't an animal close enough to borrow strength from, etc.
PHYSICAL ABILITY: 10; Evan keeps her body in fighting form. Who knows when she'll need to scale a building, rescue a cat from a tree, etc. She has excellent stamina, but leans more into agility over strength. (Unless she taps into her powers.)
MENTAL ABILITY: She's very intelligent, but that can apply to different areas. Book-wise, she loves to read. (But romance novels aren't going to save you from robots.) Street smarts? Yes. Overall, she's a strong 7.
EFFORT: High. Just because she talks to animals doesn't mean she's a disney princess. She used to pull people out of burning buildings. But also, sometimes you just need an adrenaline rush.
ANYTHING ELSE?: No, but you're amazing. Thanks for letting non-explorers participate! That's SO nice!!!
THE EVALUATIONS: Evan Finch (Non-explorer)
THE EVALUATIONS: Taby McLeod
EXPLORER DIVISION?: Yes (Primary/New)
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: N/A
POWER CONTROL: 10. Taby's powers dovetail nicely with the sport they've been learning since they could toddle, and their control of them is innate and intuitive. They also have a good understanding of their own limits and don't overextend. (That being said! They do have unrealized applications of these powers that they don't know about yet. But it's a 10 for what they can currently do.)
PHYSICAL ABILITY: 8. A longtime professional athlete, they're in peak condition. Being fast/agile/sneaky is a little more in their wheelhouse than being strong/a powerhouse, and they are physically very small, although their powers can compensate for their lack of raw physical strength where necessary.
MENTAL ABILITY: 4. Taby... can strategize, if pushed to do it. But they're fundamentally hotheaded and rash in their decision making, which would shine through in their physical evaluations even if they tried extra-hard to be rational in their written exam. They were also homeschooled by their idiot parents for their entire life, so their reading comprehension and writing skills are not great.
EFFORT: High. They're trying so hard! It's probably hurting their performance a little, actually! Taby's both hyper-competitive and thinks they should be in charge of everything, which is probably not actually true, but if they're being offered the opportunity to go out for a leadership position they are not going to waste it.
ANYTHING ELSE?:
THE EVALUATIONS: Taby McLeod
THE EVALUATIONS: Eden Chen
EXPLORER DIVISION?: No lmfao
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: N/A
POWER CONTROL: 6! Eden's powers are still relatively new to her, and she does not have a lot of fine control over her strength or speed. This lends itself to a little bit of unintended brutality, and she sometimes sends herself spinning off course when moving too fast.
PHYSICAL ABILITY: 8. An obsessive gym rat, Eden is visibly built and a natural athlete. I added +1 to the score due to the physicality of her powers.
MENTAL ABILITY: 3. sldkhg Eden has no idea what the hell is going on with this test and this is the least interesting part of the event to her.
EFFORT: Medium!! She's only here because she heard some security engineers talking about the set-up and thought it would be like Tough Mudder. It is not like Tough Mudder.
ANYTHING ELSE?: ♥ cries
THE EVALUATIONS: Eden Chen
THE EVALUATIONS: Finn MacCool
EXPLORER DIVISION?: Yes (Primary/Returning)
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: yes, once. and it's not something that is talked about.
POWER CONTROL: 10. she's had them for almost twenty years now and uses them every day.
PHYSICAL ABILITY: 9-10. she's been fighting since she was a kid and even learned how to box when she was young. she practices martial arts, pilates, plyometrics, and barre. she's very athletic and flexible and can get out of most restraints and partially dislocate her joints. her major downside is that she's a smoker.
MENTAL ABILITY: probably a 6-8. she's smart and fine with exams but she hates writing and only pays attention if something interests her.
EFFORT: low. she really just wants the opportunity to be physical and beat up things.
ANYTHING ELSE?:
THE EVALUATIONS: Finn MacCool
Re: THE EVALUATIONS: Finn MacCool
THE EVALUATIONS: Linus Lowe
EXPLORER DIVISION?: A boy can dream!! (No)
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: Absolutely not
POWER CONTROL: 8. Linus's power is not too complicated, and he's loved using it whenever he can for the last decade. He is not, however, immune to falling when he goes too far trying to show off or going out places that can't bear his weight -- thin tree branches, etc. If he can catch a surface to stop his fall, he's great. If not? Well, he's broken bones before.
PHYSICAL ABILITY: 7/8. Every day is arm day when you're a wallcrawler. (Though really, flexibility is where he shines.)
MENTAL ABILITY: Maybe 3/4? Solid C student. He's adaptable and doesn't get fazed by new challenges, but put literally no thought into this test or preparing for it before he sat down to take it -- which is exactly how he treats all preparation!
EFFORT: Combat: Medium. Obstacle course: High (and tbh he crushed it). Written assessment: Listen, he did try, in his way, but leadership ability and strategic prowess? Absolutely not. He would've done well enough with empathy, and maybe a bit better than expected with reasoning.
ANYTHING ELSE?: He absolutely stationed himself up at a ceiling corner of the room for a while. It's got a great view! He's also SO excited to be here.
THE EVALUATIONS: Linus Lowe
THE EVALUATIONS: Linus Lowe
THE EVALUATIONS: Noah Moon
EXPLORER DIVISION?: Yes (Primary/Returning)
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: Noah has been around for ages so he's been in charge at least a few times, but it's not something he actively seeks out (though he doesn't mind it, either). He's generally happy to defer to the true Olds or people who are itching to be boss, though he will absolutely resist people he thinks are stupid.
POWER CONTROL: 9?? Noah trains obsessively when it comes to his powers so he has the necessary spacial awareness, focus, and understanding of his abilities to do well with them. But he can very occasionally be a little overly careful with them if he's worried about injuring himself again.
PHYSICAL ABILITY: 7?? Noah spends a lot of time at the gym but he's more focused on being healthy than he is on becoming super buff or have a ton of stamina, so while he's fit and probably a bit above average, it's not anything majorly impressive. He tends to use his powers to block incoming threats instead of taking or avoiding the blows himself, meaning he can't take a hit that well. His prosthetic arm and leg are functionally as good as real ones, so they don't slow him down.
MENTAL ABILITY: 7?? Has been doing this for enough time that he feels like he's generally got a hang of it, and his powers require him to be very aware of his surroundings. Noah's not a genius by any means, though, and his confidence in his choices can be a bit of a double-edged sword.
EFFORT: High - Noah isn't going to lose his mind if he does poorly and isn't itching for a leadership role, but this is what he's been doing for a while and he's glad to be back at the station, so he'll give it his all.
ANYTHING ELSE?: Numbers....hard....... Kasey pls feel free to adjust as you see fit lmao
THE EVALUATIONS: Noah Moon
Re: THE EVALUATIONS
EXPLORER DIVISION?: No
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: N/A
POWER CONTROL: 10 - they are pretty much just always on, and her temperature control comes naturally to her.
PHYSICAL ABILITY: 2?? She can pick up a sack of flour and kneads dough like a champ, but she is of average size, average strength, and probably just does a mom power walk around the lake every day.
MENTAL ABILITY: 3?? lol Hypatia is not dumb (she has a PhD in Chemistry!!) but the girl does not strategize outside of being able to organize a bake sale. If this were just a smarts exam she would do very well, though.
EFFORT: Low - she's just here having fun!!!
ANYTHING ELSE?: Pls be careful in that obstacle course Hypatia.
THE EVALUATIONS: Hypatia Stone
THE EVALUATIONS: Milo Havens
EXPLORER DIVISION?: Yes (Primary/Returning)
EXPLORER LEADERSHIP?: Not really. But if she has to.
POWER CONTROL: 10! - The only time Milo's anything less than confident is when she's using someone else's powers - and that would kind of be using somebody else to beat the obstacle course anyway. So she sticks to not-possessing other residents for her run.
PHYSICAL ABILITY: 8 - She's agile and quick and slippery and when she doesn't want to navigate the traditional way, she absolutely just dissolves and ... figures out another way around. She'll clamber into robots and ooze herself out through circuitry. Sure, she'll absolutely pout and yell 'HEY!' in a super offended tone when hit, but she absorbs a large amount of damage by virtue of being less than strictly solid when it suits her.
MENTAL ABILITY: 5 - It starts off high! She's smart. She's even knowledgeable about the subject matter. But, like, man does it teeter off quickly. Gosh, that's so many questions for a job she doesn't particularly want.
EFFORT: Medium. Milo's totally here to have a good time! She's having an absolute blast. She just doesn't have a real interest in being in charge. There's already people for that.
ANYTHING ELSE?: ♥ one day i will exist, i promise!
