After much deliberation and analysis, Thornton announces which members of the Explorer Division will be taking the lead as they return to the Riftlands. Via a posting in the Training Building. He's never been one for speeches.

He makes a point of approaching each of these Division members today to offer them his congratulations and his gratitude personally. The Division is only as capable as its leadership and he knows that they'll do right by their peers. He also reminds them of any personal shortcomings that were highlighted by the exams and urges them to work hard on those too. You know. For good measure.

When addressing Taby McLeod, the only leader that's also new to the Station, Thornton acknowledges that he is asking a lot of them but assures them that they're the right person for the job. He also emphasizes that they can come to him with any questions about protocol, past experiences in the Riftlands, or anything else. He's here to help.

When addressing Annie Song, the only leader that's also a Supplementary member of the Explorer Division, Thornton offers her the opportunity to pick a co-leader or right hand if she so chooses to help her keep up with everything that will be expected of her. He knows it's a lot. But that is up to her. He also congratulates her on being the only leader that didn't struggle in any given area; a strong showing across the board, Ms. Song!

When addressing Noah Moon and Rory Fairfax, both experienced Explorers and returning leaders, Thornton expresses (professional) pleasure to be working with them again. He also asks that they set a strong example for the new leaders and make themselves available as resources to them should the need arise.

By midday, word of the new leadership results gets around to the Medical Building. Jack listens in on the gossip, initially out of professional curiosity and little else. Medical is a support division, so the quality of Exploration leaders will, in a roundabout way, impact his workload. That Rory was selected as a leader doesn't surprise him; he knows Rory is experienced even if he knows little else. Noah's name only makes him think of Dorin. Taby does give him pause, but after thinking about them for a minute he decides maybe he's being uncharitable, and that he should be interpreting their past stunt of jumping off a building as less reckless and more confidently daring.

Jack is then pleasantly surprised to overhear Annie's name among the new leaders.

This is a novel feeling—for the first time in his life, Annie is being recognized for her achievements and Jack isn't mad about it. It helps that he wasn't competing for a leadership position, of course. But after a while, he remembers that big gash on her forehead after she finished Evals. And those had been tightly-controlled circumstances. You can't really power down obstacles in the Riftlands; there's no calling time out there, no Director Thornton to oversee your progress and safely decide when you've had enough.

He wonders if being selected as a leader is actually something to celebrate after all.

Minty is nowhere to be seen after finding out! Was that rustling you just heard near a shadowy nook? Strange!

rory just grunts?? it's the kind that could either be "cool" or "aw fuck" depending on how you read it.

Taby whoops and bounces around like they just made the varsity team.

Hera wasn't that concerned, but she's still relieved not to see her name. Whew.

After speaking with Thornton, Annie expresses her gratitude for the opportunity, walks straight back to the research building, and leans her head against a wall in her office for nearly ten minutes.
