Jack turns to Raine, surprised. Annie told him Raine was one of her closest friends at the Station—involuntarily, Jack grimaces in anticipation of screwing this up. Because Annie also told him that Raine didn’t appreciate people trying too hard with him (too late for Jack), and that Raine was like a cat in that way. Jack gives Raine a once-over, wondering if Raine is about to do the sensible mid-sized sedan equivalent of biting his ankles.
“It’s a little stressful,” Jack answers truthfully. “I guess I never really thought about how dangerous it is out here.”
