Mole Hole Exploration
tuesday, june 13th
On Tuesday 6/13, a team of explorers led by Taby McLeod and Rhodes Callaway returns to the Riftlands to further investigate the tunnel system created by the captured moles. Taby is in annoyingly high spirits this morning; they even made everyone a hearty but not particularly healthy breakfast of cinnamon rolls.
On the walk out to the cavern, Annie Song swears they hear something massive following the group, although nobody can spot anything in the trees. Put on edge, Rye Ashburn screams when something brushes against their leg, but it’s just a dead branch. Vidalia LaRoux walks at the head of the group and pays the price when they fall into a giant mud puddle. While the others are fishing them out of the mud, Salvador Roca remarks that the puddle is sort of… footprint shaped? Hmmm.
Once they're back in the caverns, the rest of the explorers are introduced to Taby and Rhodes’s new Mole Deflection System: an old boombox playing hawk screeches on loop at max volume. Taby is not taking complaints, and they’re pleased to note intermittently that it seems to be working, as there is not a mole in sight.
As the group begins to traverse and map the caverns, experienced explorers of the Riftlands may be able to note that these tunnels criss-cross a portion of the surface that is particularly difficult to cover on foot. If the group is able to find another exit to the cave system, they may be able to use the tunnels as a shortcut and save valuable time in exploring the Riftlands on future excursions. But, unfortunately for everyone, Taby isn’t interested in going up. They’re interested in going down.
Descending further into the mole tunnels, Taby leads the group down a particularly steeply sloped tunnel, which narrows the deeper it goes. Just as Taby is considering turning back, the tunnel opens up into a large, high-ceilinged cavern with a hole about twenty feet wide in the center of it. The chamber is big enough for everyone to sit down and rest a moment before making the climb back up to the surface. This also gives the group a little time to investigate the hole.
When Taby suggests dropping something in to test the depth, Minty Payne seizes the opportunity to push the boombox in. The sounds of screeching fade out until even those with the sharpest senses can’t hear them anymore, but it doesn’t seem to hit any sort of bottom. No matter what the group does to investigate the hole, they can’t ascertain how deep it is — it seems like it just keep going forever.
Eventually, the group decides they are not properly equipped to go any deeper into the hole, if doing such a thing is even advisable, and head back for the day. No moles are spotted on the way out of the caverns, either. Maybe the hawk sounds weren’t as effective as Taby hoped after all!
