Away from the festivities, designated driver Tom is sitting at the bar drinking lots of water and eating enough food that when she rejoins herself before she crashes for the night, at least some of her will be decently fed and hydrated -- hopefully enough to stave off a hangover. She's getting too old for this, etc. It's a boring night, but some Tom's got to do it.
